This is part two of a five-part series describing the TAnon phenomenon as it spreads in the United States. Parts include “What is ‘TAnon’?,” “Where it Came From,” “How the Hell We Got Here,” “Key Players and What to Watch For,” and “Strategies Moving Forward.” Each section has been separated due to length and will be accumulated into a full document for distribution at a later point.
It goes without saying that this series will be extremely upsetting to targeted marginalized groups (particularly trans + youth, women, Jews, and people of color), as well as survivors of childhood sexual abuse, sex trafficking, police brutality, and/or fascist/white nationalist violence. This piece in particular includes material referencing the assault and murder of Brandon Teena, in which he is deadnamed as well as having his identity and the nature of the transphobic hate crime against him erased in favor of psychological pathologization. There is also reference to the appearance of identified fascists at protests outside clinics providing care to trans youth, as well as brief coverage of the fascist-led, police-enforced Wi Spa protest on July 3rd. Hate material is cited extensively. Please read with care and take breaks as needed.
Author note 9.11.2021: The 7.3.2021 listing for Wi Spa has been updated to reflect new information about charges filed by the Los Angeles Police Department.
To understand TAnon, it’s necessary to trace the history of a number of key concepts and their origins, as well as the social context that they developed within. This section does so by creating a timeline that connects the threads between transphobic theories surrounding “body dissociation”, “follow[ing] the money” (which inevitably leads to Jewish funders), and detransition and how it connects to gender affirming care for youth and women’s rights. In doing so, the progression from theory-crafting to on-the-ground anti-trans actions becomes evident on a national and international level. The evolution of these theories and actions influence legislation, media coverage, and psychological and/or medical care.
For trans and trans-supportive readers who are still learning about detransition as a concept, it’s important to remember that anti-trans detransition narratives and talking points are a small, albeit highly influential, minority that does not represent everyone who could be or has been labeled as detransitioned. Prior to the formation of the anti-trans detransitioned women’s community in 2013, the term (particularly as a counter-argument against trans people’s right to self-identify) was practically unheard of. Many trans people and people exploring their identity have a history of detransition and view it as part of their overall path to understand themselves. The references that are included are meant to illustrate where certain talking points originated from and how the social conversation surrounding detransition has changed. This was primarily accomplished through the influence of key figures within the anti-trans detransitioned women’s community and the anti-trans feminist and parent groups they subsequently networked with. Readers should also be mindful that many such narratives include personal trauma that can have real, lasting impact for the individual. We can simultaneously hold empathy for the impact of that trauma and firm boundaries on how it is used in individual and collaborative political pursuits at the expense of trans people.
In addition, the concept of “rapid-onset gender dysphoria” (ROGD) and social contagion is periodically referenced because of its profound influence in all three of the aforementioned spheres, though it is by no means comprehensive. For timelines and in-depth breakdowns of this particular concept, see the writings from Zinnia Jones, Julia Serano, and Florence Ashley in the Additional Resources section. There is also occasional reference to “institutional capture” and “trans lobby,” though these weren’t expanded on in detail due to length.
Through the course of this research, it became evident that there are three phases characterizing the proliferation of TAnon: formation, solidification, and escalation. In the formation phase, spanning from 2010 through 2015, the aforementioned concepts begin to emerge and are slowly coalesced into theory. In the solidification phase from 2016 through 2019, theories become more concrete, key publications are released, talking points become more steadily implanted into the media and political climate, and foundational organizing efforts begin. The escalation phase, from 2020 onwards, involves the rapid expansion of increasingly extreme conspiracies in social media and the press, progressive fascist creep connecting with the fusion with QAnon, and “grassroots” actions targeting legislation, trans-supportive businesses, and medical infrastructure.

Formation
Gender identity as a form of dissociation has its early roots in sexology through the writings of John Money in the mid 1970s, in which he “hope[d] to be able to establish the etiological program”[1] defining a trans person’s individual gender identity. Later publications emerged during the wave of multiple personality disorder (MPD) psychiatric diagnoses in the 1980s, such as the 1988 case study from Pearl G. Schwartz about a trans woman with concurrent MPD and transsexualism diagnoses.[2] Early examples of contrasting “adolescent onset” gender identity disorder from transsexualism also emerged in the late 1980s,[3] following the publication of the DSM III in 1980 and the subsequent removal of homosexuality[4] and inclusion of transsexualism[5] as psychiatric diagnoses. Similarly, heated discussions among trans men and lesbians about “lesbians […] either going straight or becoming men”[6] occurred during what later became known as the Border Wars in the 1990s. As transgender as a liberatory concept gained traction, tension between the transgender and transsexual community rose, as many members of the transsexual community viewed transgender as a “trend” spreading throughout local spaces.
What this means is that the idea that being trans is a result of trauma, dissociation, or a social contagion or trend is not new. These have been points of anxiety for the psychiatric and sexologist field, parents, lesbians and trans people for decades, much of it used by the medical establishment to further pathologize trans people and block our equal access to health and individual freedom. What is new is how those ideas get folded into the constructed narratives of radical feminist or gender critical detransition, their international spread as part of the anti-gender movement, and conspiratorial thinking as it connects to Jewish funders. These shifts are what inevitably opened the door for fusion with QAnon as we are seeing now and the potential of similar violent escalations.
Following is a timeline of those shifts. Entries range from 2010 to 2021, with 2014 and beyond separated by year.
Pre-2014
The pre-2014 era was key to the formation of TAnon. During this time period, Deep Green Resistance (DGR) faced a wave of deplatformings in response to their prolific transphobia, serving as early inspiration for Jennifer Bilek’s later conspiracies on the funding of the trans movement. It was also the period when early anti-trans detransition writings were emerging, as well as “gender critical” blogs “following the money” behind the trans movement such as Gender Trender.
- 2.2010: Carolyn Gage writes ”The Inconvenient Truth about Teena Brandon,”[7] reframing Brandon Teena’s trans identity as being a result of internalized lesbophobia and childhood sexual abuse. This article would later be cited by anti-trans resources and activists as “proof” that being trans is due to trauma manifesting as a form of dissociation.
- Early 2012: DGR co-founder Aric McBay resigns “after a trans inclusive policy was cancelled by Derrick Jensen and Lierre Keith.”[8]
- 7.09.2012: DGR gets banned from the Flying Brick Library for transphobia and transmisogyny,[9] particularly on the part of co-founders Lierre Keith and Derrick Jensen.
- 3.9.2013: Gallus Mag publishes “Dr. Rob Garofalo, Lurie Children Hospital of Chicago: “Transgender is really a Pediatric Condition“[10] on Gender Trender. In her piece, Mag noted that “Garofalo’s Lurie pediatric transgender medical clinic is funded by [t]he Tawani Foundation,” one of the earliest instances of gender critical attempts to “follow the money” behind trans health care.
- 5.10-12.2013: DGR hosts a table at the 4th annual Law and Disorder Conference in Portland, Oregon,[11] at which “a conversation [with a trans grand jury resister] about gender disintegrated into an argument wherein the DGR table expressed total opposition to a critical analysis of cis-gender identity.” After a later incident where misgendering by the cis DGR members prompted a trans woman to draw on their books, DGR was publicly rebuked by the conference organizers and blacklisted from future events.
- 5.15.2013: Earth First! Journal issues a statement[12] declaring that they “will no longer print or in any way promote DGR material” due to transphobia.
- 5.16.2013: Former DGR Portland members sever ties with DGR because of pervasive transphobia,[13] particularly from leadership Derrick Jensen and Lierre Keith.
- 5.17.2013: Resistance Ecology Conference publishes a statement denouncing DGR[14] after “it became clear that DGR Portland was not willing or able to distance themselves from their leadership”.
- 5.25.2013: DGR publishes their FAQ on Radical Feminism,[15] with early references to how gender affirming care for trans youth is “the latest version of eugenics” and that if deprived of that care, the majority “will grow up to be happy, healthy, non-gender dysphoric adults, most of whom are gay or lesbian.” To argue this point, they include detransition stories such as one submitted to Dirt from dirtywhiteboi, a transphobic butch lesbian who predominantly fixated on transmasculine people.
- 8.7.2013: Heath Atom Russell, a detransitioned radical feminist and blogger, writes “Puberty Blockers and the Destruction of Children”,[16] specifically referencing Children’s Hospital of Boston. This clinic would become a popular target in the discussion around the safety and efficacy of puberty blockers, leading up to in-person anti-trans protests in later years.
- 9.8.2013: 23XX, another emerging detransitioned radical feminist blogger, writes “Dysphoria as Dissociation”.[17] Within, she writes: “I want real answers. To live as male is to ignore, to accept dissociation as a life skill, to accept this affliction as the status-quo I must live with. I believe I deserve more than that sort of mental neglect.” Said writings set early precedent for framing detransition as part of consciousness raising through a trans-antagonistic radical feminist lens.
- 9.10.2013: Gallus Mag publishes “UK “Transgender Chicken Circuit” pre-teen Leo Waddell denied puberty blockers: Doc says long term effects unknown“,[18] again with “follow the money” references to Jennifer Pritzker and the Tawani Foundation. This post emerged just a month after Pritzker came out as trans and changed her name.[19]
- 11.16.2013: Devorah Zahav (also known as RedressAlert) writes “Clownfish Redux”,[20] which further set the groundwork for transmasculinity as a trauma response in detrans narratives using Aaron H. Devor’s 1994 sociology paper “Transsexualism, Dissociation, and Child Abuse: An Initial Discussion Based on Nonclinical Data.”[21] In the post, Zahav references Gage’s article about Brandon Teena.
2014
- 5.24.2014: Heath Atom Russell presents at Radfems Respond[22] about how “[g]ender is an oppressive social construct.” She is noted as “work[ing] for Lierre Keith” from DGR[23] and would soon become active in the formation of Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF).
- 6.2014: 23XX writes “Detransition is Deprogramming”.[24] This was republished in the Blood and Visions zine[25] that was endorsed by anti-trans parent groups,[26], [27] lesbian feminists,[28] and therapists such as James Caspian.[29]
- 6.02.2014: Heath Atom Russell writes “Radfems Respond, WoLF, and MRAs”,[30] retelling her experience at her presentation at Radfems Respond. She publishes her speaking notes, where she describes her path to gender-critical radical feminism through the writings of Sheila Jeffreys and Mary Daly, as well as announcing to the Internet the pending formation of WoLF.
- 7.10.2014: Heath Atom Russell begins writing her 4-part guide series, including notably “Advice for Parents of Teen Girls and Girl-children who Think they are Trans”[31] that reinforces the idea that being trans is a social contagion spreading through YouTube and other resources online, and directly marketing “unplug[ging]” trans youth to unsupportive parents. This kind of material set the stage for anti-trans parent and “gender critical” publications and advocacy on ROGD and social contagion.
- 12.26.2014: Denise C. outreaches detransitioned radical feminists[32] via Devorah Zahav prior to developing 4thWaveNow.
2015
- 1.6.2015: Jennifer Bilek tweets about how “’[t]ransitioning’ is the microcosm of war written all over the human body. There is profound dissociation, and trauma.”[33] In the process, she links to an article about the euthanasia of Nathan Verhelst,[34] a Belgian trans man who experienced acute distress post-surgery. This is her first known public connection between medical transition and dissociation.
- 3.17.2015: Denise C. tells her story and introduces the website 4thWaveNow with its intent.[35] In it she beings shaping her public narrative of “supportive parent goes gender critical because of the harms of the medical industry” in contradiction to her emails to Devorah Zahav.
- 3.25.2015: Denise C. posts on 4thWaveNow about “body dissociation”.[36] She describes gender dysphoria as “the pain resulting from a sense of dissociation from one’s own body and biological sex[.]”
- 4.1.2015: Walt Heyer, a detransitioned conservative Christian man who operates Sex Change Regret, writes “I Was a Transgender Woman”[37] in the Witherspoon Institute’s journal Public Discourse. Within he references therapy for a dissociative disorder, and dissociation and therapy to address it would continue to become a pervasive talking point in anti-trans talking points surrounding detransition and gender identity.
- 5.8.2015: Margaret Wente publishes “The raging battle over transgender kids”[38] about the investigations into the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in the Canadian outlet The Globe and Mail. Susan Bradley and colleague Kenneth Zucker talk about the review of their practices as conversion therapy, with Bradley commenting on how “[t]he trans lobby has got us on the run[.]”
- 5.23.2015: Denise C. publishes “New study out of Finland: Girls with gender dysphoria have many other mental health issues“[39] on 4thWaveNow with comments about body dissociation.
- 5.29.2015: Denise C. writes about the article by Margaret Wente on 4thWaveNow,[40] using Bradley’s quote about the trans lobby as a title while also noting that Bradley and Zucker “subscribe to more conventional views about gender and sex role conformity[.]”
- 5.30.2015: Jennifer Bilek’s first tweet referencing the “trans lobby” appears,[41] linking to 4thWaveNow’s post and quoting Susan Bradley.
- 6.2015: Robert Withers writes about “mind-body dissociation” and transsexualism in “The seventh penis: towards effective psychoanalytic work with pre-surgical transsexuals”[42] for the Journal of Analytical Psychology. The paper was later retracted due to ethical violations and he faces allegations of practicing conversion therapy from one of the clients referenced.[43]
- 11.20.2015: Jennifer Bilek posts a comment on Transgender Trend asking if she can write for the site.[44] In her comment, she writes “[m]y co-writer and I have been working on several articals against the trend of transgenderism.”
Solidification
The solidification phase, stretching from 2016-2019, was a critical period in the development of the “gender critical” movement. A great deal of publications and networking happened during this period, as well as some key events that provided context for the formation of TAnon: Donald Trump’s nomination and eventual election as the 45th President of the United States in 2016,[45] the development of QAnon in 2017,[46] and in the United Kingdom, the proposal from the Government Equalities Office to review the Gender Recognition Act (also 2016).[47]
In addition, throughout this year there was an explosion of publications about “gender ideology”,[48] predominantly from religious or far-right sources but with some radical feminist or anti-trans parent sources that incorporate gender critical talking points. Much of this connects to what is now known internationally as the anti-gender movement.[49]
2016
- 2.7.2016: Jesse Singal writes “How the Fight Over Transgender Kids Got a Leading Sex Researcher Fired”[50] for New York Magazine about Kenneth Zucker and the CAMH. This article later becomes foundational in a number of anti-trans parent groups and publications.
- 2.24.2016: David Marcus writes “South Dakota Stands Up To The Transgender Mafia”[51] about South Dakota’s bathroom bill in the Federalist, heavily tying in Jesse Singal’s New York Magazine piece under their first reference to the “trans lobby”. Later articles in their new tag would follow.[52]
- 4.17.2016: Jennifer Bilek responds to a question posed to 4thWave about “counter-courting” actions being taken.[53] Implying institutional capture, Bilek names Jennifer Pritzker and comments on Martine Rothblatt and transhumanism in response to a question of whether or not trans people are part of “all these orgs that are so pro trans”.
- 4.27.2016: Kaeley Triller (of Just Want Privacy in 2016 and Hands Across the Aisle Coalition in 2017) writes “I Didn’t Believe Feminists Until The Trans Lobby Attacked Me”[54] in the Federalist.
- 4.28.2016: Jennifer Bilek tweets Triller’s article.[55] From this point forth, Bilek would increasingly tweet about the “trans lobby” and “the billionaires & corporations behind [it].”
- 5.19.2016: The Economist publishes an article titled “The plughole of history”[56] that goes on about how the trans lobby is trying to turn bathrooms into a battleground because of their importance to cis people.
- 6.30.2016: Chris Bodenner releases his Reporter Notebook on “Is the ‘Trans Lobby’ Disproportionately Strong?”[57] in the Atlantic. It includes approving references of Jesse Singal’s New York Magazine article about Kenneth Zucker.
- 7.2.2016: Denise C. posts the recruitment call for Lisa Littman’s study on 4thWaveNow[58] with the earliest known use of the term “Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria.”
- 7.11.2016: Denise C. publishes “Follow the money: Trans billionaire makes new $1 million grant to Chicago pediatric transition clinic”[59] on 4thWaveNow. In doing so she picks up the baton from Gallus Mag of Gender Trender, continuing the focus on Jennifer Pritzker as a major funder through the Tawani Foundation.
- 8.11.2016: Kelly Rindell writes “George Soros: The money behind the transgender movement”[60] in the ultra-conservative publication The Washington Times. This was one of the earlier publications folding in conspiracy theories about Soros funding the push for trans rights.
- 9.30.2016: Tina Minkowitz, a prominent disability rights and psych survivor advocate, submits “to the [United Nations] Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) for its Update of General Recommendation No. 19”.[61] The submission was written with contributions from Devorah Zahav. This set precedent for future collaboration leading to the formation of the Women’s Human Rights Campaign (WHRC) in 2019 and their Declaration of Women’s Sex-Based Rights. See 2018 for more details.
- 10.17.2016: Jennifer Bilek, alongside Mary Ceallaigh, gets published in Female Erasure,[62] an anti-trans radical feminist anthology edited by Ruth Barrett. Other notable authors include: Cathy Brennan of Gender Identity Watch, Gallus Mag of Gender Trender, Elizabeth Hungerford of Sex Not Gender, Sheila Jeffreys, Lierre Keith, Temple of Diana co-founder Falcon River, detransitioned radical feminist Max Robinson, Mary Lou Singleton of WoLF, Denise C. of 4thWaveNow (under her pseudonym), and Devorah Zahav.[63] The book would later receive an endorsement from Michelle Cretella, president of American College of Pediatricians, who noted that Barrett “approached [her] […] to request permission to republish [her] scientific statement on gender dysphoria in her anthology.”[64] Female Erasure was a key publication that helped spark the Religious Right’s interest in detransition as leverage against trans rights in the United States.
- 10.27.2016: Lisa Marchiano writes “Guidance for Parents of Teens with Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria”.[65] She regularly draws inspiration from the work of detransitioned women and there are numerous similarities to Heath Atom Russell’s guides to parents. By forming this guide, Marchiano transferred the use of the pseudo-diagnosis ROGD from an informal, parental setting to a professional one. This set the stage for later manifestations of “gender critical therapy” (now sometimes referred to as “gender exploratory therapy”), including Marchiano’s own practice and professional affiliations in groups such as Rethink Identity Medicine Ethics.
2017
2017 marked a serious uptick in activity from Jennifer Bilek, primarily through Twitter but occasionally in public appearances. This escalation of tweets would continue into subsequent years. For the sake of length, only a handful of these are included.
- 3.1.2017: Andrew Pierce writes “I’ve had it up to here with these gender fascists! ANDREW PIERCE on the increasingly powerful transgender lobby”[66] in the Daily Mail. References to the “powerful transgender lobby” and comparisons of fascism would become increasingly common.
- 3.11.2017: Tina Minkowitz publishes “Female Autonomy vs Gender Identity A critical analysis of gender identity in CEDAW jurisprudence and the Yogyakarta Principles”,[67] where she extensively cites 4thWaveNow and writings from Female Erasure (including the writings of detransitioned radical feminists).
- 4.20.2017: Magdalen Berns of the UK gender critical scene tweets about Soros funding the trans movement[68] with a link to the Washington Times article from Kelly Rindell.
- 5.1.2017: Jennifer Bilek tweets that “[s]exbots r part of transgender/transhumanist god complex”[69] with references to dissociation or the “mind/body split.”
- 5.29.2017: Jennifer Bilek initially gets approved to present panel titled “Misery for Profit/Who is Funding the Transgender Movement and the Impact of LGB”[70] at Left Forum 2017. The panel aimed to “show how transgender is a political coup, positioned as an ally alongside the LGB, but are actually a homophobic element introduced by the 1% to control homosexuality, reinstate male supremacy, and utilize gay children as fodder for scientific experimentation.” After pushback about the panel’s anti-trans conspiracies, it was subsequently canceled.[71], [72]
- 6.28.2017: Katie Herzog publishes “The Detransitioners: They Were Transgender, Until They Weren’t”[73] in the Stranger. This became a landmark article as one of the first major media pieces featuring detransition, though it left out key context surrounding the anti-trans politics of the radical feminist detransitioned women’s community (of which several people profiled were a part of at the time). Ky Schevers, one of the individuals profiled (“Cass”), later wrote about her experience after leaving the community, what she was holding in her life at the same time, and how she “was presenting a public persona for the benefit of the community [she] belonged to.”[74]
- 7.21.2017: Lisa Marchiano posts “New Guidance for Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria”,[75] an updated version of her previous guidance in 2016 to include “what [she] had learned from speaking with [families of desisted youth].” In it she describes a number of controlling behaviors like limiting internet access and “early support not to affirm” that would be integrated into anti-trans parent resources purported to help their trans children “desist”.
- 8.7.2017: Nancy Thorner publishes “The Dangerous Game of ‘Gender Make-Believe’ With Children”[76] in the highly conservative Illinois Review. She writes that “[the United States] seems to be in the midst of a transgender craze, which is resulting in an increasing of child abuse among parents who think that ideological agenda is a way of life for their small children.” She references funding by Soros in the fight for gay marriage and wondering “what would be next.”
- 8.4.2017: Jennifer Bilek tweets about how “[t]he trans lobby has an agenda of destroying ppls fundamental relationship 2 their bodies, grooming entire generation of kids 2 dissociation”,[77] connecting theories surrounding dissociation to a wide-scale agenda by the trans community.
- 8.16.2017: Women’s Liberation Radio News interviews Mary Lou Singleton,[78] a midwife-herbalist and family nurse practitioner that founded Personhood for Women, about the “money behind the trans movement” in which she references Soros, Pritzker, and Stryker. She later became a big promoter of COVID-19 lockdown and vaccine disinformation.[79]
- 8.23.2017: First QAnon-related Twitter reference to trans-inclusive education in schools, calling it “[s]tate run pedophilia” and using the #SaveTheChildren tag.[80] This correlated with a number of key political events in the US,[81] including: the investigation of Russian interference into the 2016 presidential election; Donald Trump announcing his immigration plan; and the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
- 9.21.2017: An article about Maria MacLachlan at Speakers’ Corner is published in the Christian Institute, titled “Hyde Park attack exposes violence of trans lobby.”[82] MacLachlan would go on to start the website Peak Trans, a popular anti-trans reference archive of articles, blogs, and videos.[83]
- 10.6.2017: Lisa Marchiano publishes the paper “Outbreak: On Transgender Teens and Psychic Epidemics“[84] in Jungian journal Psychological Perspectives, which went viral compared to other papers in the journal. Within the paper she claims that identifying as trans for youth is “significant psychic epidemic” and citing Gender Trender, 4thWaveNow, TransgenderTrend, and detransitioned radical feminists Cari Stella and Max Robinson.[85]
- 10.6.2017: Lisa Marchiano publishes “Misunderstanding a New Kind of Gender Dysphoria“[86] in Quiellette, in which she tells the story of “Max” (a transmasc college student who Marchiano repeatedly misgenders) and “Claire” (their mother) that she describes as a “wreckage”. She again cites 4thWaveNow, detransitioned radical feminists, and Michael Bailey who calls the increase in trans youth visibility is “a socially contagious phenomenon, reminiscent of the multiple personality disorder epidemic of the 1990s.”
- 10.10.2017: Walt Heyer publishes “The Transgender Matrix: It’s Time to Choose the Red Pill”[87] in the Public Discourse, in which he describes how he escaped the “trans-matrix” and detransitioned after finding Christ. He references a column about Dr. David Kyle Foster, the ex-gay director of Pure Passion Ministries who had his videos pulled from Vimeo for promoting anti-LGBTQ conversion practices.[88]
- 10.30.2017: Bruce Ashford writes “The Ugly Truth About Sex Reassignment the Transgender Lobby Doesn’t Want You to Know”[89] in the Daily Signal, further connecting the “trans lobby” to discussions of detransition by claiming that James Caspian’s rejected research proposal was “because of the backlash [Bath Spa University] expected from powerful transgender lobbies.”
2018
If you remember 2018 as a particularly shit year for transphobia and disinformation, you’re right. Several impactful, long-lasting anti-trans publications went out during this year, including from Jennifer Bilek, as well as behind-the-scenes organizing that would soon to become the Women’s Human Rights Campaign (WHRC) and their Declaration of Women’s Sex-Based Rights.
- 1.9.2018: Stella Morabito writes “The Trans Lobby Hates This Man For Proving Sex-Change Regret Is Real”[90] about Walt Heyer in the Federalist. She paints “trans activists” as having a vendetta against detransition as a concept, when in actuality Walt Heyer has an established track record of collaborating with the far right at the expense of trans people.
- 2.20.2018: Jennifer Bilek writes her infamous Federalist article “Who Are the Rich, White Men Institutionalizing Transgender Ideology?”.[91] The article contains much of the same information her panel at Left Forum 2017 was advertising. The article rapidly spread as evidence that the “transgender lobby” is funded by Jennifer Pritzker, George Soros, and Jon Stryker, including by neo-Nazis that made sure to point out that all three are Jewish.[92]
- 3.1.2018: Lisa Marchiano publishes “Transgenderism and the Social Construction of Diagnosis“[93] on Quillette, a response to Brynn Tannehill’s analysis of Lisa Littman’s poster abstract on her research on ROGD.[94]
- 5.1.2018: Heather Brunskell-Evans and Michele Moore release the book Transgender Children and Young People: Born in Your Own Body,[95] centered on social contagion and detransition. Featuring chapters from figures such as Stephanie Davies-Arai of Transgender Trend, conversion therapists Lisa Marchiano and Robert Withers, Jen Izaakson (writing about transhumanism), and Carey Callahan, Transgender Children and Young People became a landmark publication for Brunskell-Evans and lead to the publication of later texts.
- 5.25.2018: Michael Biggs publishes “The Open Society Foundations & the transgender movement”[96] on 4thWaveNow, further adding to the conspiracies of Soros funding the transgender movement.
- 6.18.2018: Jesse Singal writes “When Children Say They’re Trans”[97] in the Atlantic, also depicting trans youth as being victims of a social contagion spread by YouTube. He interviewed detransitioned women Carey Callahan and Max Robinson, as well as quoting Cari Stella, all of whom have been linked to anti-trans organizing.[85], [98] Julia Serano formulated a timeline detailing how the article contributed to the moral panic on detransition, desistance, and social contagion.[99]
- 7.3.2018: An organizing email from Devorah Zahav (i.e. Redress Alert) is sent out on behalf of Tina Minkowitz. This chain would begin the rough drafts of what has become the Declaration on Women’s Sex Based Rights through WHRC. Other notable names in email chain include Max Robinson and Liz Waterhouse of Listening to Lesbians.
- 7.5.2018: Jennifer Bilek publishes “Transgenderism Is Just Big Business Dressed Up In Pretend Civil Rights Clothes”[100] in the Federalist.
- 7.11.2018: Libby Emmons publishes “The Transhumanism Revolution: Oppression Disguised as Liberation”[101] in Quillette, with a lengthy section explaining how “transgender ideology [is] an essential component of the drive toward transhumanist acceptance[.]”
- 7.14.2018: Tina Minkowitz emails about the Declaration draft with a link to Libby Emmon’s Quillette article about transhumanism. She argues that it “connects to women’s liberation and its relation with the body.”
- 7.20.2018: Lisa Marchiano publishes “Trans Activism’s Dangerous Myth of Parental Rejection“[102] in Quillette. In it, she accuses adult trans people of using the “ominous specter of ignorant, bigoted parents who coldly turn their child out, or cause him or her to endure torturous conversion therapy to eradicate transgender feelings” to encourage trans youth to separate from their families.
- 8.6.2018: Sue Donym writes “Inauthentic Selves: The modern LGBTQ+ Movement Is Run By Philanthropic Astroturf And Based On Junk Science“,[103] with more “follow[ing] the money” talk claiming that the transgender movement is due to Jennifer Pritzker and others astroturfing with behind the scenes funding.
- 8.7.2018: Renee Gerlich collects a “quick facts and stats”[104] page on gender identity for a New Zealand audience, with a large section on “big money and media” with numerous Jennifer Bilek citations and references to Soros and detransition.
- 8.16.2018: Lisa Littman publishes “Parent reports of adolescents and young adults perceived to show signs of a rapid onset of gender dysphoria“,[105] the study advertised on 4thWaveNow and other anti-trans parent sites, in PLoSONE. This paper was quickly rebuked by scientifically literate trans people and researchers, and a correction was issued in 2019[106] to highlight key limitations in surveying parents. For more detailed analysis, see the writings by Zinnia Jones, Julia Serano, and Florence Ashley in the Additional Resources section.
- 8.23.2018: Erin Brewer starts posting videos about gender dysphoria and writing about trans issues.[107] She would later go on to form the anti-trans hate group Partners for Ethical Care (PEC), which regularly campaigns against trans youth’s access to gender affirming care.

- 12.3.2018: Rod Dreher publishes “Orban Vs. Soros University“[111] in the American Conservative as a sympathetic response to Prime Minister Victor Orban drivng Central European University out of Hungary.[112] Dreher argues that “[t]he globalist billionaire Soros is – was – funding a university in Budapest whose purpose is to radically undermine the political and cultural order of Hungary[,]” citing gender studies, transgenderism, and gender ideology.
2019
- 1.11.2019: Giorgia Serughetti publishes a critical response titled “Why Orban’s Hungary is afraid of Feminism and Academic Freedom (and George Soros, of course)“[113] in ResetDOC, expanding on how the conspiracy that Soros is funding feminism and trans rights has spread in Hungary. Serughetti points out how “[g]ender studies are a target of the right-wing populist forces in Hungary and many countries of the world, not only and not so much because they put forward ideas that are not aligned with the neo-traditional visions of the family and the nation—or for their alleged destabilizing effect on individuals’ sexual or gender identity—but because they represent a radical critique of the social and political hierarchies on which authoritarianism is based, and which it needs to strengthen in order to exist.”
- 2.18.2019: The domain womensdeclaration.com, the site launched by Women’s Human Rights Campaign for the Declaration on Women’s Sex-Based Rights, is registered.[114] By June, WHRC claimed that 5,094 individuals and 45 organizations from 81 different countries had already signed.[115] WHRC is organized primarily by Sheila Jeffreys and Heather Brunskell-Evans.

- 4.8.2019: Population Research Institute publishes a response[118] to OpenDemocracy’s report on anti-gender funding spreading from the US to Europe,[119] aiming to discredit them as “[a] left-wing, George Soros-funded media organization.”
- 4.30.2019: Early reference to the “transgender agenda as a way to bring in and normaliz[e] pedophil[ia]”[120] with both #SaveTheChildren and #WakeUpAmerica hashtags. This usage of #WakeUpAmerica predates Erin Brewer’s use; as demonstrated in Part 1, Brewer uses the hashtag to promote anti-trans protests outside of clinics. These historical records show she is following an established trend.
- 5.15.2019: Dr Lord Moonie hosts a meeting at the House of Lords in the UK called “First Do No Harm: The ethics of transgender healthcare”.[121] The meeting features Marcus Evans talking about the trans lobby and a “representative” from ADF-backed Kelsey Coalition in the US titled “An Urgent Call to Action from the US: End Experimental Identity Medicine.”
- 5.22.2019: Nicole Russell writes “The Trans Lobby Is Now Marketing to Your Kids”[122] in the Daily Signal.
- 7.31.2019: “Tabitha” posts a version of Jennifer Bilek’s 2018 Federalist article to the Renegade Tribune,[123] a far-right publication operated by pagan white supremacist Kyle Hunt.[124] Analysis shows the articles are nearly identical, though the Renegade version includes more explicit antisemitism by replacing all instances of “white” with “jewish”, swapping in other homophobic and transphobic language, and adding neo-Nazi propaganda cartoons targeting Jews.
- 8.22.2019: Gender Health Query (GHQ) publishes news commentary titled “Non-Binary Identity, A Familiar Story”[125] in response to an article in The New Yorker. Co-opting another person’s personal experience with dysphoria, they describe the New Yorker article “A Year without a Name” as being about “self-hatred, identity instability, body dissociation, and confusion.”
- 9.1.2019: Heather Brunskell-Evans and Michele Moore publish Inventing Transgender Children and Young People,[126] featuring work by Stephanie Davies-Arai of TransgenderTrend, Michael Biggs, David Bell, and conversion therapists Lisa Marchiano, Robert Withers, and Stella O’Malley. Trans people quickly pushed back against its publication, noting how many of the highlighted authors have little to no expertise in trans health care.[127]
- 10.1.2019: The Minnesota Family Council releases Parent Resource Guide: Responding to the Transgender Issue,[128] written in collaboration with Family Policy Alliance, Heritage Foundation, Kelsey Coalition, Parents of ROGD Kids, and WoLF. The Family Policy Alliance of New Jersey would soon use it to encourage anti-trans parents to push for segregation of trans people from school locker rooms,[129] citing state statute N.J.S.A. 18A:36-41.
- 10.18.2019: Derrick Jensen is interviewed by Hubert Collins for Counter-Currents,[130] a white nationalist publication operated by Greg Johnson.[131] Johnson has previously written about how “[t]he organized Jewish community is the principal enemy — not the sole enemy, but the principal enemy — of every attempt to halt and reverse white extinction[,]” going on to name that “[w]hite nationalism is inescapably anti-Semitic.”[132] Alongside this, Johnson is openly transphobic and anti-Black, all with the aim of creating a white ethnostate. Collins was active in Donald Trump’s election campaign in 2016, sharing how he “encouraged white advocates to go onto Leftist Websites and stump for Dr. Stein, and recommended they use anti-Clinton articles from the Marxian Website Jacobin”[133] in order to sow division among leftwing voters and increase Trump’s odds of success. Jensen, during his interview with Collins, goes on a lengthy rant about not being able to respect trans women’s identities after reading comments on a KKK website about how they’re not a hate group because they “love whites.”
- 10.24.2019: Tess Sulaman posts a series of tweets connecting the “LGBTQ Agenda” to the #SaveTheChildren hashtag,[134] calling it Satanism.
- 10.27.2019: Jennifer Bilek registers her new website the 11th Hour Blog,[135] which would become her primary writing platform in the next phase.
Escalation
The escalation phase, presently ongoing, is named as such because of the rapid expansion of anti-trans, antisemitic conspiracies that converged with the QAnon conspiracies during the COVID-19 pandemic and Donald Trump’s re-election campaign. In particular, Jennifer Bilek was especially active through the 11th Hour (of which only some publications are highlighted here), which would then become a frequent citation in far-right and radical feminist or gender critical media. White nationalist publications either repeating or citing previous references became more prolific, and a number of extremist conferences and on-the-ground actions emerged. Legislature targeting trans people also became more common, inevitably spreading like wildfire throughout 2021.
2020
- 1.2020: Julie Bindel writes “Triumph of the trans lobbyists”[136] in the Critic.
- 1.15.2020: South Dakota HB 1057, an early legislative attempt to ban gender affirming care for trans youth in the United States, is brought to the state House.[137] While the bill eventually died because of local trans mobilization against it, it set precedent for the legislative onslaught seen in 2021 in large part because of its connection to ADF.[138]
- 1.21.2020: Jennifer Bilek publishes “Constructing the Legal Lie of the Transgender Child – Part I”[139] on 11th Hour, her first publication on her new site.

- 8.1.2020: Brandon Showalter writes “Mom goes undercover to investigate Planned Parenthood after daughter is prescribed testosterone” in the Christian Post.[152] A conservative Christian, he has extensively written articles centered on ex-LGBT narratives. In particular, he focuses on the “born again Christian” angle such as his coverage of California-based ministry Equipped to Love protesting California’s pending conversion therapy ban AB2943.[153] He is the primary reporter for anti-trans protests and other on-the-ground actions, and frequently interviews anti-trans parents that participate.
- 8.6.2020: The Facebook Group for the 11th Hour Blog appears, with Jennifer Bilek and joey brite as administrators. brite would soon become a prolific organizer of conspiracy events and anti-trans protests outside of clinics treating trans youth.
Since its development, the 11th Hour Blog Facebook group has become rife with far-right crossover, ranging from nationalist musicians who post COVID denial to Bilek sharing content from neo-Nazi Keith Woods about the “Jewish aspect” of transhumanism.
- 8.8.2020: joey brite launches the Can I Get A Witness (CIGAW) Conference,[154] bringing together a large, “diverse” panel of bigots with various conspiracies. Notable presenters include Jennifer Bilek, Lynn Meagher, Abigail Shrier, Don Smith, Jane Wheeler of Rethink Identity Medicine Ethics, conversion therapist Sasha Ayad, anti-trans detransitioned woman Sydney Wright (previously) of Kelsey Coalition, conspiracy YouTuber the Deprogrammer, anti-trans radical feminist organizer Courtney Piper/Rosewater, and many others. An example of the panels is the Deprogrammer’s, where half of her presentation is a propaganda-style video, and then going on about the “LGBT/Transgender Agenda”.
- 8.12.2020: Jennifer Bilek starts tweeting Woods’ video titled Transhuman Judaism on @11thBlog.[155] Over time, a neo-Nazi account appears in her mentions and convinces her that she should name the fact that Soros, Pritzker, and Stryker are Jewish instead of referring to them as white, citing the Woods video. She concedes the point, noting that she’d [probably leave it out if writing it today for the reason stated” and calling the video “fascinating.”
- 8.13.2020: Mary Claire Pattons reports on a controversy emerging surrounding L.O.L. dolls supposedly wearing lingerie after a video had gone viral on social media.[156] Pattons notes that “[s]ome on social media are speculating that the L.O.L. dolls are part of a bigger conspiracy to groom children for sexual abuse and sex trafficking. Williams’ post used hashtags that many are using to bring attention to the issue of child sex abuse, but which have also become associated with conspiracy theories driven by the far-right QAnon community. QAnon followers believe the world is being controlled by Satan-worshipping pedophiles in politics, entertainment and the media.”
During this controversy, crossover between QAnon and trans issues emerged as a handful of parents claimed to have found “transgender dolls” and expressing outrage over it.
- 8.20.2020: As the November election drew near, claims that the Democratic Convention was “complete with HOLLYWOOD Pedophiles, and transgender peeps”[157] emerged in the Twitter #SaveTheChildren hashtag. The claims were used as leverage to call people to vote for Trump.

- 10.6.2020: Heather Brunskell-Evans publishes Transgender Body Politics.[162] Heavily citing Jennifer Bilek, Brunskell-Evans writes that trans people “are actually an industry that creates medical identities out of sex, while simultaneously mounting active campaigns to deconstruct sexual dimorphism within the law. Transgenderism is a multi-billion dollar industry, disguised as a civil rights movement.”
- 10.9.2020: Jennifer Bilek writes “Not Just a Tattoo: Transgenderism Attacks Our Fundamental Humanity”[163] in the American Conservative. One of the founders of the American Conservative, Taki Theodoracopulos, is a Greek nationalist known for his antisemitism, anti-Black racism, and writings in support of the Greek ultranationalist political party Golden Dawn.[164] Theodoracopulos would go on to found Taki’s Magazine, featured later.
- 10.15.2020: Jennifer Bilek is cited by Brandon Showalter as an “investigative journalist” that has “researched and written extensively on the money streams behind the medicalization of gender.”[165] Over time, Showalter would increasingly cite Bilek in his publications.
- 10.16.2020: Erin Brewer interviews Alix Aharon about the “Gender Offender” map project for her YouTube channel.
Previous writings of ours discussed briefly how the original content of the map was copied from a trans woman named Erin (not Brewer) who wanted to help give back to the trans community.[166] The majority of the markers are connected to Planned Parenthood, which Aharon targets using disinformation akin to anti-abortion conspiracies.
- 10.23.2020: Transgender Abuse, the website used to distribute the Gender Offenders map and conspiracy writings, is registered by Alix Aharon.[167]
- 11.11.2020: Neo-Nazi Scott Howard publishes The Transgender Industrial Complex,[168] in which he writes that “[w]e cannot escape the persistent and consistent intersections of Jews and Judaism both in the specific context of the LGBTQ agenda and in the broader globalist system and wealth accrual” and explicitly names Jewish people, organizations, or initiatives over 930 times. Throughout the book he cites two articles from Jennifer Bilek, “Who Are the Rich, White Men Institutionalizing Transgender Ideology?” in the Federalist and “The Billionaires Behind the LGBT Movement” in First Things. The publishing company, Antelope Hill Publishing, sells far right content such as an English translation of the Sportsvorschrift Für Das Heer,[169] a fitness manual used for military training in 1938 Nazi Germany.

- 12.1.2020: The Bell v Tavistock ruling comes out in favor of Keira Bell and Ms. A in the UK.[172] Immediate concern is brought by UK community members and activist or research collectives over the use of “expert witnesses” of dubious expertise and who are connected to Alliance Defending Freedom.[173]
- 12.28.2020: Anti-trans pickets begin targeting clinics treating trans youth in the US.[174] One parent interviewed shares pulling her inspiration from the writings of 4thWaveNow and other sites, and both convey shifting from leftwing to center or rightwing politics because of trans health care for youth. The Bell v Tavistock ruling is cited as a major motivator for protesting.
- 12.31.2020: In response to anti-trans parents and conservatives asking how to bring results like the Bell v Tavistock ruling to the US, WoLF tweets their intent to “hir[e] a volunteer coordinator soon” to “support that kind of networking.”[175]
2021
Note: As this phase is ongoing, the following is subject to change as new information comes to light.
In just 6 months, we’ve witnessed a rapid proliferation of legislative attacks, disinformation and conversion practices, and protests. Already, over 100 anti-trans bills have been introduced throughout the US, with some passing and becoming law. Anti-trans conversion therapy conferences reliant on medical disinformation and antisemitic conspiracies begin to circulate, reaching clinicians around the world. Disinformation continues to spread internationally, through the help of social media and public appearances from theorycrafters. On top of that, the protests mentioned continue to escalate, spreading first nationally and then internationally. The majority happen outside of clinics, with a handful outside prisons and businesses, and for the ones happening in the US, there is increasing attendance from white nationalists who publicize the events or resort to violence.
For more info on the legislative attack we face, see “Inflection Point” by Andrew Bales, “The Anti-Trans Lobby’s Real Agenda” by Jules Gill-Peterson, and the Anti-Trans Hate Machine podcast by TransLash Media in the Additional Resources section. Due to capacity and other restraints, we can only cover Texas HB1399.
- 1.23.2021: A conference chaired by David Bell and advertised as being for mental health professionals goes live, titled ““Do Not Adjust Your Set”: Sex, Gender And Public Policy.”[176] Speakers of particular note include Heather Brunskell-Evans, Jennifer Bilek, Michael Biggs, Lisa Marchiano, and Marcus and Susan Evans. Responses from David Bell, Marchiano, and Susan Evans makes it evident that they view being trans as a mental illness and that gender affirming care needed to be regulated against or “prevented” by psychotherapists – i.e., conversion therapy.[177] This would become the first in a series of such conferences.
- 1.25.2021: Kara Dansky, noted as being on the steering committee for WHRC, appears on KUSI News about President Joe Biden’s executive order expanding anti-discrimination policy to include gender identity and sexual orientation.[178] During the segment she plugs the WHRC Declaration and, when asked by the host “who’s supporting this movement financially[,]” she directs people to Jennifer Bilek’s blog 11th Hour.
- 1.26.2021: Graham Hryce, an Australian, writes “If capitulating to the trans lobby is the best Joe Biden can do in his first week in power, ailing America is truly doomed”[179] in RT in response to President Joe Biden’s executive order.
- 2.12.2021: Alix Aharon’s Gender Offender Map appears on social media under the name Gender Mapper.[180] Initial resistance comes from trans community members, allies, and clinicians, and then a rapid proliferation of propaganda material from Aharon. Claiming that there are over 300 “pediatric gender clinics” in the United States, she posts screenshots of her map with color-coded icons to give the impression that gender affirming care for trans youth is rapidly expanding.[181] What she doesn’t reveal is how many of these “clinics” are random therapy offices with “testimony” submitted by transphobic parents (sometimes representing multiple locations for the same clinician), or bogus data her or her volunteers have obtained via crank-calling.[182] This distortion is used to push for all-encompassing bans on gender affirming care regardless of age.
- 2.14.2021: New US-based organization LGB Fight Back, represented by Carrie Hathorn, launch their Valentine’s Day protests outside of clinics in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Hartford, and Ontario, Canada.[183] One clinic targeted, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, has been a constant recipient of anti-trans harassment dating back to 2013 due to writings such as those published by Gender Trender and 4thWaveNow.
- 2.17.2021: Jennifer Bilek presents for Object! UK about “the gender identity industry”.[184] It’s in this video that she discusses what got her interested in “following the money” of trans health care, citing the deplatforming of DGR back in 2013 and her own failed attempts to book venues for them by Derrick Jensen’s request.
- 2.19.2021: Jennifer Bilek is scheduled to appear at the Countess Conference “Resisting Captivity: Gender Ideology in Ireland” for March 8.[185] After inquiries to Helen Joyce about why she is presenting alongside Bilek[186] despite her known promotion of white supremacist material, Bilek is removed from the program listing[187] after claiming to have a “family commitment.”
- 2.23.2021: Emilie Kao hosts a panel through the Heritage Foundation to announce the launch of the Promise to America’s Children initiative.[188] An anti-LGBTQ collaborative project uniting the forces of Family Policy Alliance, the Heritage Foundation, and Alliance Defending Freedom, it seeks to undermine the Equality Act and “similar policies” under the guise that they “will penalize Americans (including parents) who disagree with the new ideologies.”[189] Panel speakers include Gregory Baylor of ADF, Michelle Cretella of American College of Pediatricians, and Maria Keffler of PEC.
- 3.8.2021: Women Picket DC occurs on International Women’s Day 2021.[190] Organized by anti-trans radical feminists Kara Dansky, Amy Sousa, and Courtney Piper/Rosewater to protest President Joe Biden’s anti-discrimination executive order. Sponsors of importance include: the US chapter of WHRC, Feminists in Struggle, CIGAW, Keep Prisons Single Sex, Free Birth Society, The Ride: A Woman’s Rebellion, Stand Up International, Women’s Liberation Radio News, and PEC.[191]
- 3.8.2021: WHRC USA submits letter to Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer opposing the Equality Act.[192] Within, they use the Declaration and its international signatory as evidence of need.
- 3.12.2021: Detrans Awareness Day, organized by anti-trans detrans people and related advocacy groups, attracts the attention of nationalist Shane Trejo. Trejo then publishes “#Detransawarenessday Trends on Twitter as Ex-Trans People Expose the Harm Caused by the Lifestyle“[193] for far-right publication Big League Politics. The hashtag went viral online and attracted a wealth of attention from alt-right and pro-conversion therapy crowds. When the organizers were called to denounce the positive coverage from far right publications because of their racism and transphobia, they refused.[194]
- 3.14.2021: WoLF submits to the United Nations Independent Expert for the Human Rights Council,[195] stacking signatures in the process to boost the air of legitimacy.[166]
- 3.14.2021: The anti-trans #WakeUpAmerica clinic pickets in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and New York City occur,[196] this time organized by PEC and joey brite using her project CIGAW. Alix Aharon as the Gender Mapper tweets that “[w]e will be protesting in countries in the Middle East, Europe, and more US cities.”[197]
- 3.16.2021: Alix Aharon appears on Newsmax,[198] the alt-right news station championed by Donald Trump for their promotion of election fraud conspiracies, to promote the Gender Mapper project.
- 3.17.2021: Steve Sailer writes “Poison, Mutilate, and Sterilize“,[199] an article in far-right publication Taki’s Magazine about ROGD and “autogynephilia” that references Abigail Shrier’s book Irreversible Damage. In the article, Sailer claims that Ted Kaczynski (i.e. the Unabomber) was autogynephilic, with heavy implications that Autistic trans women are likely to be violent, and makes references to “World War Trans.” Jennifer Bilek later retweets the article in endorsement.[200]
- 3.21.2021: Derrick Jensen interviews Jennifer Bilek about the “money and power behind trans lobby” for Derrick Jensen Resistance Radio.[201] The interview gets circulated by DGR’s social media accounts.
- 3.28.2021: Julian Vigo interviews LGB Fight Back co-founders Carrie Hathorn and Belissa Cohen for the Savage Minds podcast, justifying the recent anti-trans clinic protests.[202] The podcast claims that “the trans lobby’s institutional capture” is resulting in “fast-tracking children into becoming lifetime medical patients, the promotion of gay eugenics and the wider elision of what can only be regarded as gay conversion therapy.”
- 3.31.2021: Tweets by Jennifer Bilek connect “gender clinics” as mapped by Gender Mapper to Josef Mengele,[203] the Nazi officer and doctor famous for his medical experiments on prisoners of Auschwitz.
- 4.5.2021: Jennifer Bilek merges conspiracies created by the Gender Mapper[204] with her theories on the “gender industry,” body dissociation, and transhumanism.
- 4.7.2021: Jean C. Lloyd publishes “Activists Deliberately Amplified Transgenderism To America’s Gullible Kids, And Few Are Protecting Them“[205] in the Federalist, with references to body dissociation and “big pharma” marketing. Lloyd calls people to “[a]mplify [v]oices of [r]eason”, which include Abigail Shrier, Walt Heyer, Jennifer Bilek, Society for Evidence Based Gender Medicine (SEGM), and Stephen Levine (one of the Bell v Tavistock expert witnesses).
- 4.7.2021: Maria Keffler of PEC publishes Desist, Detrans & Detox: Getting Your Child Out of the Gender Cult,[206] a “self-help guide” which instructs parents on how to force their trans kids to “desist” using abusive behaviorist techniques. The book received a wave of pushback from trans people, advocating for it to be removed from Amazon for its promotion of conversion practices towards trans and gender nonconforming youth. It was pulled from their publisher Lulu due to violating Lulu’s policies, and initially from Amazon, though Amazon later re-released it.[207]
- 4.12.2021: Alix Aharon presents for WHRC “on her advocacy using ‘Gender Mapper'” as part of their Feminist Question Time.[208] Within she claims that Planned Parenthood and other providers of gender affirming care are driving “children […] down a rabbit hole” via Tumblr hashtags and Instagram.
- 4.14.2021: Texas HB 1399 is scheduled for a public hearing,[209] in which Lynn Meagher appears representing Parents of ROGD Kids and naming herself as part of the Gender Mapper project. She describes the process of personally crank calling clinics and using quotes from the conversation as part of her legal testimony before getting turned away by a committee member for out-of-state interference in local politics. Collusion between Mass Resistance TX and Gender Mapper occurred[210] to try to force its passing while simultaneously tagging far-right or conservative Christian publications such as the Federalist, Big League Politics, and Church Militant. Jennifer Bilek also promotes Meagher’s testimony, claiming that the committee member’s rebuke was “[c]ensorship in action.”[211]
- 4.16.2021: Another anti-trans clinic protest using the hashtag #PullBackTheCurtain occurs, this time in Tacoma, Washington. The protest was first announced by joey brite on Spinster[212] and then brought over to Twitter with posters alluding to antisemitic blood libel.[213] They tagged Lisa Marchiano, Jennifer Bilek, Parents of ROGD Kids, Transgender Trend, and Lisa Littman in an effort to draw their attention. Of note is the fact that the protest was recorded live by Robert R. Zerfing, an identified member of the Pacific Northwest Proud Boys, for his far-right channel The Common Sense Conservative.[214] brite stated in a later blast of the event that “[s]ince mainstream media won’t cover us, we’re bringing to the masses in other ways”[215] – in other words, attracting white nationalists who can do it instead.
The protest was also filmed in full by another far-right broadcast channel called Bards Eye News and directing people to Jennifer Bilek’s blog.
- 4.16.2021: The anti-trans clinic protests make it to Australia, occurring in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Hobart.[216] The organizers coordinated with PEC. Detransition, particularly the Bell v Tavistock ruling, was cited repeatedly as justification.
- 5.22.2021: More anti-trans clinic protests are held by affiliates of joey brite’s CIGAW project, this time in Boston, Massachusetts; Tukwila, Washington;[217] and Brazil.[218] One of the attendees in Boston, Muttmere, is a member of Parents of ROGD Kids who was interviewed by Brandon Showalter about her opposition to the affirmation and social transition of her trans granddaughter.[219] Beth Scaer of Save Women’s Sports also attended.[220]
In Tukwila, protesters harassed a local surgeon’s private practice. Among them was Beth Daranciang, a Washington state Senate candidate for the 46th Legislative District in 2020. Currently she serves as Vice Chair of the King County Republican Party.
- 5.26.2021: Bianca Conte publishes “Gender: da Soros in su, ecco brand e imprenditori che sponsorizzano la causa. E fanno business”[221] (English: “Gender: from Soros up, here are brands and entrepreneurs sponsoring the cause. And they do business”) in Secolo d’Italia, an Italian nationalist publication historically connected to the Italian Social Movement, National Alliance, and People of Freedom. Citing Jennifer Bilek, Conte repeats many of the same conspiracies about Soros, Pritzker, and Stryker. Conte also argues that Arcus Foundation “raised 20 million dollars for the New global trans initiatives in collaboration with a foundation called Novo, which is also involved in supporting Black Lives Matter and other similar movements.”
- 6.1.2021: Jennifer Bilek publishes “Foundations Are Setting the Transgender Agenda and Targeting Children” in the American Conservative.[222]
- 6.5.2021: Marcus and Susan Evans hold the “Gender Dysphoria – A Therapeutic Model for Working With Children” conference[223] to market their new book to mental health clinicians treating trans youth. During the event, Marcus Evans revealed identifying patient information to over 200 attendees, and individual attendees, including other clinicians, quickly identified the conference as promoting conversion therapy.[224]
- 6.9.2021: “Grassroots” parent groups flood local school board meetings across the US in “anti-CRT” protests.[225] Further research uncovered the overlap between the “anti-CRT” and anti-trans groups and strategies, including abuse of FOIA requests and testimony farming via online forms, and many of the meetings and protests include discussions about “gender ideology” being taught in schools.[226] At least one of the identified groups, Prep School Accountability, has been uncovered as being astroturfed by right-wing lobbyist Rick Berman.[227] PEC later endorse two groups involved, Arlington Parent Coalition by PEC co-founder Maria Keffler and Parent & Child Loudoun.[228]
- 6.15.2021: Spanish anti-trans group Contra el Borrado de las Mujeres extensively cites Jennifer Bilek and Patrick of Gender Critical Woman in their new resource page talking about the “Q Lobby”.[229]
- 7.3.2021: After a viral video emerges onto social media alledging that a trans woman was “slinging [her] penis” in the shower room, a protest is arranged by white nationalists outside of Wi Spa in Los Angeles.[230] The protest brings trans-supportive antifascist counter-protesters, who face off with the white nationalist protesters and Los Angeles Police Department.[231] Jennifer Bilek promotes clipped footage of the protest from far-right group AntifaWatch.[232] Initial analysis noted that it was potentially a false flag that has heavily circulated among far-right and gender critical accounts, resulting in a local Asian trans woman being falsely accused and sent death threats.[233] The Los Angeles Police Department later put out an arrest warrant on September 2nd for a different individual, noting that they “have charged a 52-year-old with indecent exposure.”[234] After the first protest on July 3rd, several notable gender critical figureheads appeared,[235] including: Gaye Chapman of AfterEllen, joey brite of CIGAW, Bellisa Cohen of LGB Fight Back, and Lynn Meagher of Parents of ROGD Kids and Gender Mapper.
What This Means
While it may seem like the onslaught of anti-trans propaganda, legislative attacks, and now-violent protests are a sudden phenomenon, the climate has been building up to this point for well over a decade. The seeds were planted in 2010 and 2013, and the work of rightwing lobbying groups, transphobic theorycrafters, and militant affiliates of Deep Green Resistance meant that reaching this point was only a matter of time. The formation of QAnon in 2017, funneling people into “Save The Children” conspiracies and gaining momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic as everyone went remote also inflamed the issue, as has the manufactured societal fear towards “antifa,” trans women (particularly trans women of color), and any discussions of anti-racism and trans liberation. As things continue to evolve, understanding how ideas have spread over time, the channels used, and through which individuals or organized groups offers those fighting for trans liberation insight that is essential for turning things around.
Key limitations
This timeline, while as comprehensive as possible, is incomplete due to the nature of the internet as websites come and go and, with that, their information. Multiple “gender critical” websites and documents of historical note have been taken down over time, and existing web archives have limited search capacity that is dependent on relevant tags and comments being consistently saved. Similarly, because of the social media pushback against QAnon radicalization spaces, groups and posts have been purged from places such as Facebook. Dates and therefore patterns noted are based on what can be presently found given the circumstances. Should new information or archives come to light, this post will be updated accordingly.
Coming next is Part III: “How the Hell We Got Here,” unpacking the social and political context that led to the rise of TAnon and what this means for the fight for trans liberation.
