graham email segment – head of wpath

Segment of an email sent by julie graham to Devorah Zahav, dated September 6 2013.

Text reads:

I’ve been talking with the head of WPATH about this. She is one of the reasons that the SOC follows the European protocols for children rather than the newly developing American ones.

That all said, I’m not in the camp that believes we should stop providing hormones or surgery to people.  I think they are medications and work well for some people.  Like I said I have listened to many many people who are in pain and suffering related to gender dysphoria and seen great improvements in people for whom this is the real issue.  Often, the people who are NOT truly dysphoric about gender do not come to see a gender specialist.  Lots of people have a regular therapist who can not discriminate between between dysphoria and other issues.  Also lots of people just skip over therapists entirely or figure out how to get around them.   It’s not a good model.

I have two thoughts about next steps.  If people were willing to be anonymously audiotaped, we could have a transcript created and I could try to get people’s actual words published in IJT, the journal for WPATH.  Also, if folks wanted to meet with the head of WPATH, too, I could see if she could do that. I am that serious about this.  It’s a bad time of year for her right now because the International Conference is coming up but I suspect she’d make time if she can. The other thing I suggested to [CENSORED], I can never remember if its chaoscrashcat or crashchaoscat is we and I mean we, could devise an online survey.  It would involve figuring out what questions you (detransitioners) may have and I know I have some, making sure it’s as research-sound as possible and then launching it.  Given that there are people who would not understand this out there, there would have to be a way to guarantee that people who are not questioning detransitioning, detransitioners, people who regret, etc. do not mess it up.  It will be perceived negatively by many people.
