The Mechanisms of TAnon: Where it Came From

This is part two of a five-part series describing the TAnon phenomenon as it spreads in the United States. Parts include “What is ‘TAnon’?,” “Where it Came From,” “How the Hell We Got Here,” “Key Players and What to Watch For,” and “Strategies Moving Forward.” Each section has been separated due to length and will be accumulated into a full document for distribution at a later point.

It goes without saying that this series will be extremely upsetting to targeted marginalized groups (particularly trans + youth, women, Jews, and people of color), as well as survivors of childhood sexual abuse, sex trafficking, police brutality, and/or fascist/white nationalist violence. This piece in particular includes material referencing the assault and murder of Brandon Teena, in which he is deadnamed as well as having his identity and the nature of the transphobic hate crime against him erased in favor of psychological pathologization. There is also reference to the appearance of identified fascists at protests outside clinics providing care to trans youth, as well as brief coverage of the fascist-led, police-enforced Wi Spa protest on July 3rd. Hate material is cited extensively. Please read with care and take breaks as needed.

Author note 9.11.2021: The 7.3.2021 listing for Wi Spa has been updated to reflect new information about charges filed by the Los Angeles Police Department.

To understand TAnon, it’s necessary to trace the history of a number of key concepts and their origins, as well as the social context that they developed within. This section does so by creating a timeline that connects the threads between transphobic theories surrounding “body dissociation”, “follow[ing] the money” (which inevitably leads to Jewish funders), and detransition and how it connects to gender affirming care for youth and women’s rights. In doing so, the progression from theory-crafting to on-the-ground anti-trans actions becomes evident on a national and international level. The evolution of these theories and actions influence legislation, media coverage, and psychological and/or medical care.

For trans and trans-supportive readers who are still learning about detransition as a concept, it’s important to remember that anti-trans detransition narratives and talking points are a small, albeit highly influential, minority that does not represent everyone who could be or has been labeled as detransitioned. Prior to the formation of the anti-trans detransitioned women’s community in 2013, the term (particularly as a counter-argument against trans people’s right to self-identify) was practically unheard of. Many trans people and people exploring their identity have a history of detransition and view it as part of their overall path to understand themselves. The references that are included are meant to illustrate where certain talking points originated from and how the social conversation surrounding detransition has changed. This was primarily accomplished through the influence of key figures within the anti-trans detransitioned women’s community and the anti-trans feminist and parent groups they subsequently networked with. Readers should also be mindful that many such narratives include personal trauma that can have real, lasting impact for the individual. We can simultaneously hold empathy for the impact of that trauma and firm boundaries on how it is used in individual and collaborative political pursuits at the expense of trans people.

In addition, the concept of “rapid-onset gender dysphoria” (ROGD) and social contagion is periodically referenced because of its profound influence in all three of the aforementioned spheres, though it is by no means comprehensive. For timelines and in-depth breakdowns of this particular concept, see the writings from Zinnia Jones, Julia Serano, and Florence Ashley in the Additional Resources section. There is also occasional reference to “institutional capture” and “trans lobby,” though these weren’t expanded on in detail due to length.

Through the course of this research, it became evident that there are three phases characterizing the proliferation of TAnon: formation, solidification, and escalation. In the formation phase, spanning from 2010 through 2015, the aforementioned concepts begin to emerge and are slowly coalesced into theory. In the solidification phase from 2016 through 2019, theories become more concrete, key publications are released, talking points become more steadily implanted into the media and political climate, and foundational organizing efforts begin. The escalation phase, from 2020 onwards, involves the rapid expansion of increasingly extreme conspiracies in social media and the press, progressive fascist creep connecting with the fusion with QAnon, and “grassroots” actions targeting legislation, trans-supportive businesses, and medical infrastructure.

Formation

Gender identity as a form of dissociation has its early roots in sexology through the writings of John Money in the mid 1970s, in which he “hope[d] to be able to establish the etiological program”[1] defining a trans person’s individual gender identity. Later publications emerged during the wave of multiple personality disorder (MPD) psychiatric diagnoses in the 1980s, such as the 1988 case study from Pearl G. Schwartz about a trans woman with concurrent MPD and transsexualism diagnoses.[2] Early examples of contrasting “adolescent onset” gender identity disorder from transsexualism also emerged in the late 1980s,[3] following the publication of the DSM III in 1980 and the subsequent removal of homosexuality[4] and inclusion of transsexualism[5] as psychiatric diagnoses. Similarly, heated discussions among trans men and lesbians about “lesbians […] either going straight or becoming men”[6] occurred during what later became known as the Border Wars in the 1990s. As transgender as a liberatory concept gained traction, tension between the transgender and transsexual community rose, as many members of the transsexual community viewed transgender as a “trend” spreading throughout local spaces.

What this means is that the idea that being trans is a result of trauma, dissociation, or a social contagion or trend is not new. These have been points of anxiety for the psychiatric and sexologist field, parents, lesbians and trans people for decades, much of it used by the medical establishment to further pathologize trans people and block our equal access to health and individual freedom. What is new is how those ideas get folded into the constructed narratives of radical feminist or gender critical detransition, their international spread as part of the anti-gender movement, and conspiratorial thinking as it connects to Jewish funders. These shifts are what inevitably opened the door for fusion with QAnon as we are seeing now and the potential of similar violent escalations.

Following is a timeline of those shifts. Entries range from 2010 to 2021, with 2014 and beyond separated by year.

Pre-2014

The pre-2014 era was key to the formation of TAnon. During this time period, Deep Green Resistance (DGR) faced a wave of deplatformings in response to their prolific transphobia, serving as early inspiration for Jennifer Bilek’s later conspiracies on the funding of the trans movement. It was also the period when early anti-trans detransition writings were emerging, as well as “gender critical” blogs “following the money” behind the trans movement such as Gender Trender.

2014

2015

Solidification

The solidification phase, stretching from 2016-2019, was a critical period in the development of the “gender critical” movement. A great deal of publications and networking happened during this period, as well as some key events that provided context for the formation of TAnon: Donald Trump’s nomination and eventual election as the 45th President of the United States in 2016,[45] the development of QAnon in 2017,[46] and in the United Kingdom, the proposal from the Government Equalities Office to review the Gender Recognition Act (also 2016).[47]

In addition, throughout this year there was an explosion of publications about “gender ideology”,[48] predominantly from religious or far-right sources but with some radical feminist or anti-trans parent sources that incorporate gender critical talking points. Much of this connects to what is now known internationally as the anti-gender movement.[49]

2016

  • 2.7.2016: Jesse Singal writes “How the Fight Over Transgender Kids Got a Leading Sex Researcher Fired[50] for New York Magazine about Kenneth Zucker and the CAMH. This article later becomes foundational in a number of anti-trans parent groups and publications.
  • 2.24.2016: David Marcus writes “South Dakota Stands Up To The Transgender Mafia[51] about South Dakota’s bathroom bill in the Federalist, heavily tying in Jesse Singal’s New York Magazine piece under their first reference to the “trans lobby”. Later articles in their new tag would follow.[52]
  • 4.17.2016: Jennifer Bilek responds to a question posed to 4thWave about “counter-courting” actions being taken.[53] Implying institutional capture, Bilek names Jennifer Pritzker and comments on Martine Rothblatt and transhumanism in response to a question of whether or not trans people are part of “all these orgs that are so pro trans”.
  • 4.27.2016: Kaeley Triller (of Just Want Privacy in 2016 and Hands Across the Aisle Coalition in 2017) writes “I Didn’t Believe Feminists Until The Trans Lobby Attacked Me[54] in the Federalist.
  • 4.28.2016: Jennifer Bilek tweets Triller’s article.[55] From this point forth, Bilek would increasingly tweet about the “trans lobby” and “the billionaires & corporations behind [it].”
  • 5.19.2016: The Economist publishes an article titled “The plughole of history[56] that goes on about how the trans lobby is trying to turn bathrooms into a battleground because of their importance to cis people.
  • 6.30.2016: Chris Bodenner releases his Reporter Notebook on “Is the ‘Trans Lobby’ Disproportionately Strong?[57] in the Atlantic. It includes approving references of Jesse Singal’s New York Magazine article about Kenneth Zucker.
  • 7.2.2016: Denise C. posts the recruitment call for Lisa Littman’s study on 4thWaveNow[58] with the earliest known use of the term “Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria.”
  • 7.11.2016: Denise C. publishes “Follow the money: Trans billionaire makes new $1 million grant to Chicago pediatric transition clinic[59] on 4thWaveNow. In doing so she picks up the baton from Gallus Mag of Gender Trender, continuing the focus on Jennifer Pritzker as a major funder through the Tawani Foundation.
  • 8.11.2016: Kelly Rindell writes “George Soros: The money behind the transgender movement[60] in the ultra-conservative publication The Washington Times. This was one of the earlier publications folding in conspiracy theories about Soros funding the push for trans rights.
  • 9.30.2016: Tina Minkowitz, a prominent disability rights and psych survivor advocate, submits “to the [United Nations] Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) for its Update of General Recommendation No. 19”.[61] The submission was written with contributions from Devorah Zahav. This set precedent for future collaboration leading to the formation of the Women’s Human Rights Campaign (WHRC) in 2019 and their Declaration of Women’s Sex-Based Rights. See 2018 for more details.
  • 10.17.2016: Jennifer Bilek, alongside Mary Ceallaigh, gets published in Female Erasure,[62] an anti-trans radical feminist anthology edited by Ruth Barrett. Other notable authors include: Cathy Brennan of Gender Identity Watch, Gallus Mag of Gender Trender, Elizabeth Hungerford of Sex Not Gender, Sheila Jeffreys, Lierre Keith, Temple of Diana co-founder Falcon River, detransitioned radical feminist Max Robinson, Mary Lou Singleton of WoLF, Denise C. of 4thWaveNow (under her pseudonym), and Devorah Zahav.[63] The book would later receive an endorsement from Michelle Cretella, president of American College of Pediatricians, who noted that Barrett “approached [her] […] to request permission to republish [her] scientific statement on gender dysphoria in her anthology.”[64] Female Erasure was a key publication that helped spark the Religious Right’s interest in detransition as leverage against trans rights in the United States.
  • 10.27.2016: Lisa Marchiano writes “Guidance for Parents of Teens with Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria”.[65] She regularly draws inspiration from the work of detransitioned women and there are numerous similarities to Heath Atom Russell’s guides to parents. By forming this guide, Marchiano transferred the use of the pseudo-diagnosis ROGD from an informal, parental setting to a professional one. This set the stage for later manifestations of “gender critical therapy” (now sometimes referred to as “gender exploratory therapy”), including Marchiano’s own practice and professional affiliations in groups such as Rethink Identity Medicine Ethics.

2017

2017 marked a serious uptick in activity from Jennifer Bilek, primarily through Twitter but occasionally in public appearances. This escalation of tweets would continue into subsequent years. For the sake of length, only a handful of these are included.

2018

If you remember 2018 as a particularly shit year for transphobia and disinformation, you’re right. Several impactful, long-lasting anti-trans publications went out during this year, including from Jennifer Bilek, as well as behind-the-scenes organizing that would soon to become the Women’s Human Rights Campaign (WHRC) and their Declaration of Women’s Sex-Based Rights.

  • 1.9.2018: Stella Morabito writes “The Trans Lobby Hates This Man For Proving Sex-Change Regret Is Real[90] about Walt Heyer in the Federalist. She paints “trans activists” as having a vendetta against detransition as a concept, when in actuality Walt Heyer has an established track record of collaborating with the far right at the expense of trans people.
  • 2.20.2018: Jennifer Bilek writes her infamous Federalist article “Who Are the Rich, White Men Institutionalizing Transgender Ideology?”.[91] The article contains much of the same information her panel at Left Forum 2017 was advertising. The article rapidly spread as evidence that the “transgender lobby” is funded by Jennifer Pritzker, George Soros, and Jon Stryker, including by neo-Nazis that made sure to point out that all three are Jewish.[92]
  • 3.1.2018: Lisa Marchiano publishes “Transgenderism and the Social Construction of Diagnosis[93] on Quillette, a response to Brynn Tannehill’s analysis of Lisa Littman’s poster abstract on her research on ROGD.[94]
  • 5.1.2018: Heather Brunskell-Evans and Michele Moore release the book Transgender Children and Young People: Born in Your Own Body,[95] centered on social contagion and detransition. Featuring chapters from figures such as Stephanie Davies-Arai of Transgender Trend, conversion therapists Lisa Marchiano and Robert Withers, Jen Izaakson (writing about transhumanism), and Carey Callahan, Transgender Children and Young People became a landmark publication for Brunskell-Evans and lead to the publication of later texts.
  • 5.25.2018: Michael Biggs publishes “The Open Society Foundations & the transgender movement[96] on 4thWaveNow, further adding to the conspiracies of Soros funding the transgender movement.
  • 6.18.2018: Jesse Singal writes “When Children Say They’re Trans[97] in the Atlantic, also depicting trans youth as being victims of a social contagion spread by YouTube. He interviewed detransitioned women Carey Callahan and Max Robinson, as well as quoting Cari Stella, all of whom have been linked to anti-trans organizing.[85], [98] Julia Serano formulated a timeline detailing how the article contributed to the moral panic on detransition, desistance, and social contagion.[99]
  • 7.3.2018: An organizing email from Devorah Zahav (i.e. Redress Alert) is sent out on behalf of Tina Minkowitz. This chain would begin the rough drafts of what has become the Declaration on Women’s Sex Based Rights through WHRC. Other notable names in email chain include Max Robinson and Liz Waterhouse of Listening to Lesbians.
Email from Devorah Zahav, dated July 3 2018, to detransitioned radical feminists on behalf of Tina Minkowitz. She proposes “constitut[ing themselves] as an organized group to write gender-critical lesbian-focused stuff to the UN[.]” Link to full image description.
Two partially censored emails from Tina Minkowitz, both dated July 14 2018, in the Declaration draft email chain. Link to full image description.
Email with drafts from Tina Minkowitz, dated October 5 2018, in the Declaration draft email chain with Devorah Zahav, Max Robinson, and Liz Waterhouse. Link to full image description.

While there were substantial changes between these drafts and the final product, with the current manifestation heavily referencing UN law, it was foundational with multiple sections still included almost word-for-word.

Text comparison between the draft sent by Tina Minkowitz and the current edition of WHRC’s Declaration on Women’s Sex-Based Rights. A hefty chunk of the text in both documents is highlighted as identical or similar in meaning.

2019

Text comparison analysis between Jennifer Bilek’s famous Federalist article and the article by “Tabitha” on an antisemitic, white supremacist news site Renegade Tribune. The analysis notes a 73.1% match and highlighting most of the identical text, though it is actually higher due to the AI missing chunks of text. “Tabitha” added explicit antisemitism with notations about “jewish capitalism”, echo symbols, and a picture of the yellow stars used by the Third Reich for Jewish prisoners.

Escalation

The escalation phase, presently ongoing, is named as such because of the rapid expansion of anti-trans, antisemitic conspiracies that converged with the QAnon conspiracies during the COVID-19 pandemic and Donald Trump’s re-election campaign. In particular, Jennifer Bilek was especially active through the 11th Hour (of which only some publications are highlighted here), which would then become a frequent citation in far-right and radical feminist or gender critical media. White nationalist publications either repeating or citing previous references became more prolific, and a number of extremist conferences and on-the-ground actions emerged. Legislature targeting trans people also became more common, inevitably spreading like wildfire throughout 2021.

2020

About page for the 11th Hour Blog public Facebook group. Its focus points are “Transgender * Technology * Capitalism” and has 620 members.

Since its development, the 11th Hour Blog Facebook group has become rife with far-right crossover, ranging from nationalist musicians who post COVID denial to Bilek sharing content from neo-Nazi Keith Woods about the “Jewish aspect” of transhumanism.

Don Smith shares a video titled “Divide & Conquer: ‘Woke’ Edition!” from An0maly, a musician who posts COVID and election fraud conspiracy videos, with the tag #dysphorictales.
Example of An0maly’s COVID conspiracy posts. Link to full image description.
Jennifer Bilek shares a link to Keith Woods’ video “Transhuman Judaism,” where he in turn cites her 2018 Federalist article. Text reads: “I have written extensively on the intersections of transgenderism and transhumanism. Kieth Woods takes this a step further and discusses the intersection of these two phenomenon with Judaism. Don’t miss it. I believe he is onto something!”
  • 8.8.2020: joey brite launches the Can I Get A Witness (CIGAW) Conference,[154] bringing together a large, “diverse” panel of bigots with various conspiracies. Notable presenters include Jennifer Bilek, Lynn Meagher, Abigail Shrier, Don Smith, Jane Wheeler of Rethink Identity Medicine Ethics, conversion therapist Sasha Ayad, anti-trans detransitioned woman Sydney Wright (previously) of Kelsey Coalition, conspiracy YouTuber the Deprogrammer, anti-trans radical feminist organizer Courtney Piper/Rosewater, and many others. An example of the panels is the Deprogrammer’s, where half of her presentation is a propaganda-style video, and then going on about the “LGBT/Transgender Agenda”.
One of the slides from the Deprogrammer’s presentation at CIGAW 2020 painting her past involvement in LGBTQ+ activism in 2010 as “completely indoctrinat[ing her] into trans rights activism.” Link to full image description.

During this controversy, crossover between QAnon and trans issues emerged as a handful of parents claimed to have found “transgender dolls” and expressing outrage over it.

A Facebook post, dated August 12 2020, claiming to have found a transgender L.O.L. Surprise doll while sharing the video posted in #SaveTheChildren hashtags. Text reads: “Oh myy i didnt know about this BUT i did find a transgender one”
Another Facebook post from August 12 2020 using #SaveOurChildren hashtags. Text reads: “Mamas check your little one’s LOL dolls. When you undress them and submerge them in ice water, you get everything from #pizzagate, transgender to hooker dolls. Such a sick, twisted world we live in and it wants your children!” Censored link to the viral videos.
  • 10.6.2020: Heather Brunskell-Evans publishes Transgender Body Politics.[162] Heavily citing Jennifer Bilek, Brunskell-Evans writes that trans people “are actually an industry that creates medical identities out of sex, while simultaneously mounting active campaigns to deconstruct sexual dimorphism within the law. Transgenderism is a multi-billion dollar industry, disguised as a civil rights movement.”
  • 10.9.2020: Jennifer Bilek writes “Not Just a Tattoo: Transgenderism Attacks Our Fundamental Humanity[163] in the American Conservative. One of the founders of the American Conservative, Taki Theodoracopulos, is a Greek nationalist known for his antisemitism, anti-Black racism, and writings in support of the Greek ultranationalist political party Golden Dawn.[164] Theodoracopulos would go on to found Taki’s Magazine, featured later.
  • 10.15.2020: Jennifer Bilek is cited by Brandon Showalter as an “investigative journalist” that has “researched and written extensively on the money streams behind the medicalization of gender.”[165] Over time, Showalter would increasingly cite Bilek in his publications.
  • 10.16.2020: Erin Brewer interviews Alix Aharon about the “Gender Offender” map project for her YouTube channel.

Erin Brewer interviews Alix Aharon on October 16 2020 for her YouTube channel prior to co-founding Partners for Ethical Care together. Description reads: “In part 2 of a 2 part interview, Alix Aharon shares her expertise on how the evolution of the transgender movement as we discuss the impact of queer theory and Alix shares her map of gender offenders.”

Previous writings of ours discussed briefly how the original content of the map was copied from a trans woman named Erin (not Brewer) who wanted to help give back to the trans community.[166] The majority of the markers are connected to Planned Parenthood, which Aharon targets using disinformation akin to anti-abortion conspiracies.

Screenshot of Erin’s Informed Consent HRT map, zoomed in on New England. The vast majority of the markers line up precisely with much of Aharon’s map.
Cross comparison of sample point data between the Gender Offenders map and Erin’s Informed Consent HRT map. The original Gender Offenders map has 748 markers compared to 726 markers in Erin’s map. The (anonymitized) names and marker description are identical.

2021

Note: As this phase is ongoing, the following is subject to change as new information comes to light.

In just 6 months, we’ve witnessed a rapid proliferation of legislative attacks, disinformation and conversion practices, and protests. Already, over 100 anti-trans bills have been introduced throughout the US, with some passing and becoming law. Anti-trans conversion therapy conferences reliant on medical disinformation and antisemitic conspiracies begin to circulate, reaching clinicians around the world. Disinformation continues to spread internationally, through the help of social media and public appearances from theorycrafters. On top of that, the protests mentioned continue to escalate, spreading first nationally and then internationally. The majority happen outside of clinics, with a handful outside prisons and businesses, and for the ones happening in the US, there is increasing attendance from white nationalists who publicize the events or resort to violence.

For more info on the legislative attack we face, see “Inflection Point” by Andrew Bales, “The Anti-Trans Lobby’s Real Agenda” by Jules Gill-Peterson, and the Anti-Trans Hate Machine podcast by TransLash Media in the Additional Resources section. Due to capacity and other restraints, we can only cover Texas HB1399.

Example “testimony” submitted by a parent on behalf of her adolescent trans teen, rejecting even more conservative gatekeeping from clinicians. Text reads: “My husband and I went for a private consultation about our 14 year old who suddenly announced she was trans. A ***, clinical psychologist, listened to our story then said ‘hmmm it’s not a clear cut case of gender dysphoria. If your daughter wants to go on Testosterone, she will need to come for 12 sessions.’ We never went back.”
The spokesperson of the protest being interviewed by Robert R. Zerfing for the Common Sense Conservative YouTube Channel.

The protest was also filmed in full by another far-right broadcast channel called Bards Eye News and directing people to Jennifer Bilek’s blog.

Partial post of the livestream from Bards Eye News about the protest, dated April 16 2021 and connecting it to 11th Hour Blog and Can I Get A Witness.

In Tukwila, protesters harassed a local surgeon’s private practice. Among them was Beth Daranciang, a Washington state Senate candidate for the 46th Legislative District in 2020. Currently she serves as Vice Chair of the King County Republican Party.

What This Means

While it may seem like the onslaught of anti-trans propaganda, legislative attacks, and now-violent protests are a sudden phenomenon, the climate has been building up to this point for well over a decade. The seeds were planted in 2010 and 2013, and the work of rightwing lobbying groups, transphobic theorycrafters, and militant affiliates of Deep Green Resistance meant that reaching this point was only a matter of time. The formation of QAnon in 2017, funneling people into “Save The Children” conspiracies and gaining momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic as everyone went remote also inflamed the issue, as has the manufactured societal fear towards “antifa,” trans women (particularly trans women of color), and any discussions of anti-racism and trans liberation. As things continue to evolve, understanding how ideas have spread over time, the channels used, and through which individuals or organized groups offers those fighting for trans liberation insight that is essential for turning things around.

Key limitations

This timeline, while as comprehensive as possible, is incomplete due to the nature of the internet as websites come and go and, with that, their information. Multiple “gender critical” websites and documents of historical note have been taken down over time, and existing web archives have limited search capacity that is dependent on relevant tags and comments being consistently saved. Similarly, because of the social media pushback against QAnon radicalization spaces, groups and posts have been purged from places such as Facebook. Dates and therefore patterns noted are based on what can be presently found given the circumstances. Should new information or archives come to light, this post will be updated accordingly.

Coming next is Part III: “How the Hell We Got Here,” unpacking the social and political context that led to the rise of TAnon and what this means for the fight for trans liberation.
